I'm not offended or whatever nonsense by some perceived disloyalty in the part of the developers. It does feel like a POV that needs to be overly explained and defended. I am team utterly drowning in disappointment. On the other hand, I can also understand the trepidation because FFXV's action combat was severely lacking. It was always the narratives, worlds, and the way that the players *gained* those abilities that were the interesting parts.įinal Fantasy VII Remake's combat, which is a real-time game with turn-based hybrid elements (I'd argue its more "real time with pause" than either pure real time or turn-based), is more impactful than any of the turn-based games (save maybe Tactics), with more strategy in choosing which abilities to use, when to use them, and how to manage the resources needed to use them. You really just spammed physical attacks or your strongest magic or abilities. I can understand mourning the loss of turn-based Final Fantasy, but honestly the turn-based combat in the older games was never particularly strategic or unique on its own. The ATB itself was a direct attempt to move the series from pure turn-based to a more exciting, "real" feeling type of battle, and that was 30 years ago I just want to ride my Chocobo while I still have the opportunity.Įarlier than that, depending on degrees. I'm mourning the loss of time as much as anything else here. A single player, party based, blockbuster Final Fantasy may never happen again and if it does I may not be at a place in life where I'm still playing games. There is a lot more to many people's disappointment than some kind allegiance to a series of Roman numerals. There are, however, no other subseries to my knowledge that are filling this void. I do think if Square was making big budget games incorporating these elements with some regularity there would be significantly less out cry. None of them are set in a world with all of the little details, recurring characters and music themes we've come to associate with Final Fantasy. Obviously there are countless options to play a different game or game series. Absolutely everyone is entitled to be totally excited or have some other nuanced opinion. Of course we don't know everything about the game yet. There are pieces like this that appear to be missing and for me it's disappointing. This camaraderie makes any period in the game where a character is forced to proceed alone truly feel like something is missing. The portion of the game where characters are introduced and you bond over a plot point (or confusing lack of one) before they join you on a team of which you entirely control the stats, gear, build, etc. The main this that is different this time is the lack of a true party. I only remember murmurs from the XV days as I largely didn't pay attention. There probably was somewhat similar outroar over the systems in XII-XV. In this era of gaming, however, the next big budget blow out Final Fantasy is 5-10+ years away if at all and even then it might be an MMO or something. If these games came out every couple years I wouldn't care at all. The disappointment I feel is based solely in time. Yoshi-P didn't betray fans by hijacking the franchise and I'm all for a numbered entry or "mainline" game in the series having this type of gameplay if that's what they want.
